The vacuum control switch on your Volvo provides vacuum to the brake booster assisting the driver brake. When the your Volvo is running, the vacuum control valve opens for the vacuum created by the vacuum pump to pull on the inner diaphragm of the brake booster to pull on the brake pedal when the driver presses it, easing the foot pressure needed to operate the brake master cylinder. When your Volvo is not running, the vacuum control valve closes, trapping vacuum in the brake booster to provide some brake pedal assistance if needed. The vacuum control switch is known for developing leaks in the control solenoid allowing vacuum to escape and making the brake pedal difficult to press and it's harder to slow and stop your Volvo. The Volvo 31400692 vacuum control switch is an original equipment direct replacement for the Volvo 31400692 and 30645493 vacuum control switches used on the Volvo S60, S80, V70, and XC70 models from 2003-2009.
