The AC compressor is the heart of your BMW climate control system. It functions by compressing gas refrigerant into liquid and dropping the refrigerant”s temperature below freezing. This liquid refrigerant is then pumped into the evaporator core inside the passenger compartment where the blower motor blows air through the evaporator to cool the air before flowing out of the AC vents.

If the AC compressor fails, refrigerant cannot be compressed and pumped through the AC system and your climate control system and not be able to cool the air coming from the AC vents.

Signs of a Faulty BMW AC Compressor
Warm air coming from the AC vents when your climate control is set on cool or a grinding or whining noise coming from your engine when the AC is turned on are both signs that the AC compressor has failed.

Replacing Your BMW AC Compressor
The AC compressor only needs to be replaced if it fails and your BMW should be inspected by a certified automotive technician before replacing the AC compressor to ensure the AC compressor is faulty. Since automotive refrigerant is invisible to the naked eye, refrigerant leaks are often misdiagnosed as AC compressor failures.

Due to extremely high pressures in the AC system, AC compressor replacement is not a DIY project. Only certified automotive technicians with the proper equipment are able to depressurize and evacuate your BMW AC system before removing and replacing the AC compressor, and refilling your AC system with refrigerant. Replacing the AC evaporator, receiver drier, and expansion valve are recommended when replacing the AC compressor as a failed AC compressor often distributes small particulates throughout the AC system that clog the passages in these parts. It is also highly recommended to replace the AC receiver drier whenever the AC system is opened as the desiccant inside will absorb moisture in the air and not be able to absorb moisture in the AC system properly.
