The clutch slave cylinder for the S6S37BZ sequential manual gearbox (SMG) on your BMW is the hydraulic cylinder that disengages the clutch for the manual transmission to shift gears. When the driver shifts up or down through the gears, electronic sensors tell a hydraulic actuator to pump hydraulic fluid into the salve cylinder to disengage the clutch, while another hydraulic actuator shifts the transmission from one gear to another. This process is similar to electronic shifting systems used in Formula 1 racing, allowing the driver to shift gears faster than on a traditional manual transmission. Most use a clutch pedal to manually disengage the transmission and linkages to manually shift gears. If the slave cylinder on your sequential manual gearbox develops a leak or the sensor on it stops monitoring the slave cylinder position your transmission will not shift and the slave cylinder will have to be replaced.
