The valve cover oil deflector with crankcase ventilation and oil trap on your Volvo allows crankcase gases to vent into the intake system, and deflects oil down in the cylinder head to help lubricate the cams and valve train. It then traps oil sludge keeping it out of the engine and intake system. When the oil trap inside of the valve cover oil deflector becomes clogged, crankcase pressure builds inside the engine, causing oil leaks from the valve cover and oil dipstick tube. To prevent this from happening, Volvo recommends replacing the valve cover defector every 100,000 miles as routine maintenance.
