The brake booster is a power-assisted aid for applying brakes, making it faster and easier to slow your Volvo to a stop. The brake booster is a canister attached to the master cylinder that uses vacuum or hydraulic pressure to amplify the force from the brake pedal to the brake master cylinder. The two main types of brake boosters are vacuum-operated brake boosters (most commonly used) and hydraulic brake boosters.

Brake boosters fail when they can no longer provide braking assistance. A stiff or unresponsive brake pedal indicates that the brake booster has failed. A ruptured diaphragm in a vacuum brake booster, a hydraulic leak in a hydraulic brake booster, or a failed check valve are all ways a brake booster can fail and will require brake booster replacement.

Important Note:

A split vacuum line, failed vacuum pump, faulty power steering pump, or a power steering hydraulic leak can create the same symptoms as a failed brake booster but does not require brake booster replacement to solve.
