The Land Rover Discovery was first released in 1989, designed to be the smaller and cheaper SUV option available to a wider variety of people than the Range Rover model. The first series was meant to have full off-road capabilities but was pragmatic for daily use. The original interior of the car was a ‘Sonar Blue’, but eventually also had your more traditional beige. The original model also had a removable center console which many used as a handbag. In 1994, the V8 engines got an upgrade from a 3.5 liter to a 3.9-liter engine.

Within the second series, the SUV became more accommodating to seat adults in all seven seats of the vehicle, now all facing forwards. In 2002 we saw pocketed Discovery headlamps, redesigned indicators and brake lights.

The 3rd series offered a stepped roofline and an Integrated Body Frame with independent suspension. This enhanced the off-road capabilities that it had to offer while allowing it to still be a great road tripping vehicle. Drivers were introduced to a system to choose what kind of terrain that they were driving on. This made it easier for off-roading beginners. The loss of the spare tire mounted on the back was not a hit with the Rover fans though. A lot of the changes that occurred in the Discovery four were primarily cosmetic and just altered the front and rear light units, new grille and bumper, and a “rounder” shape. This model had the new surround camera system with a screen and updated speedometer and tachometer.

The Discovery five which is the most recent model to be released now has the most rounded shape of all the models created. The tailgate is top-hinged and the Discovery headlights are now horizontal. The fuel economy is now better than ever and now they even offer a mild hybrid engine. The one thing that remained the same since the original model, is the asymmetrical license plate mount.

The air suspension is also pretty unique to the Discovery. The newer models offer three different engine types when you are typically offered two. Some of the common repairs needed for the Land Rover Discovery are rear cargo door latch failure which is common in the 1994-2004 models. Another is leaking head gaskets which was also most common in the 1994-2004 models. The air suspension seems to remain a recurring problem in many of the models. Lower control arm repairs are generally needed around 50,000 miles. A water pump leak is also another very common problem in the Discovery 4 models. All in all the car seems pretty reliable but will definitely start to have problems once it reaches a certain mileage. It also hasn’t had too many “major” changes just mainly in the body style and cosmetic changes. Definitely on the pricier side of the car buying scale but it does have lots of room if you have a bigger family.
