In the late 90s and early 2000s, Volvo’s answer to the compact executive sedan came in the form of the Volvo S40 and V40. The “Saloon” 40 was originally intended to be named the S4, however Audi got the nameplate first. The 1.9L turbo S40 was the official wakeup call to the world that Volvo was steadily prepared to enter the compact and subcompact Euro vehicle market. Previous releases by Volvo had garnered a plethora of safety awards, with little left to the imagination in the style and performance/handling departments. The second generation S40 utilized one of the largest vehicle platforms of the 2000s in the Volvo V1 platform. Essentially the subframe, suspension and steering components are shared by each of the following cars:

The Volvo V40 or versatility, was produced at about a 2/3 clip to the S40. The V40 engines had a more environmental focus and were generally weak cars. The V40 cross-country was the most exciting sub model and features a Haldex Gen-5 all wheel drive system.
Volvo S40 sales grew rapidly upon the 2nd generation release in 2004, though plateaued in 2007. The nameplate was eventually abolished in 2012.
