For 20 years now, Porsche has been producing their award-winning luxury midsize crossover SUV, the Cayenne. The first-generation Cayenne, the 955, hit showrooms in 2003 as the first V8 Porsche since the 1995 model year. Many skeptics were concerned that Porsche should stick to their track-ready cars, but it was an obvious strategic play for the German manufacturer. Built on the VW PL71 platform, Porsche Cayenne entered the US marketplace to compete with the Audi Q7 and the VW Touareg. The 3.2L VR6 was the base model offered, while the Cayenne S was equipped with the 4.5L V8. The main difference between the Cayenne and the Touareg was the intake manifold. In order for Porsche to squeeze a few extra ponies out of their engine, they designed a manifold that would allow for a more generous amount of air circulation from the air intake system to the exhaust system.
The second and third generation Cayenne boasted many of the ground-breaking features of their predecessors and added modified improvements to aerodynamics and design. The 2011 Cayenne was noticeably longer than the 2003-2008 version, but also managed to be lighter as well with the use of aluminum and magnesium panels. Door mounted side view mirrors and a more sloped rear windshield drew comparisons to the Porsche Carrera GT. The later model Cayenne also embraces the direct-injection technology used by the Porsche Panamera allowing for more power output from the V8.
