The popular Saab 900 was an evolution of the 2-digit Saab cars 95, 96, & 99. The cast-iron B-engine originally supplied by Triumph, was primarily constructed of cast iron, and essentially installed backwards! The transmission was also uncharacteristically bolted directly to the bottom of the engine at the oil pan. The Saab 900 featured Bosch fuel injection and many models came in turbo. One of the quirkier facts about the 900 is that Saab intentionally positioned each of the gauges on the dash arranged by frequency of use. This enabled the driver to keep his or her eyes on the road for the longest intervals possible. The Saab 900 Classic was produced in Sweden from 1978-1994 and designed by Bjorn Envall. Envall remained with Saab and oversaw the co-Fiat designed Saab 9000, before General Motors took over production of Saabs in 1988.
The B-engine was eventually replaced by the H-engine in 1981. Instead of backwards installation, the H-engine was horizontally positioned like an inline-4 engine would be. The higher compression engine was also used in the Saab 9-3 & 9-5. The performance seeker and Saab aficionado would likely opt for the Saab 900 Turbo 16S. This iconic model was able to propel to 62 MPH in under 9 seconds.

The double wishbone suspension featured on the Saab 900, originally didn't even contain tie rods. This provided an extremely comfortable ride as there were fewer joint points of impact while the car was traveling. The 4-cylinder Saab 900 ignition system utilizes an ignition cassette. When replacing this ignition cassette, it is best to also swap out the NGK laser platinum spark plugs.
