2022 BMW i4: Strong Competition for the Tesla Model 3

BMW has always been a car manufacturer ahead of the curve, and their recent announcement of the 2022 BMW i4 electric car is just one more example of their drive to improve their car designs. Their efforts are bearing fruit in the form of a true contender in the electric game. Because BMW has not officially unveiled the i4, all pictures are showing the car under camouflage (with, most likely, false elements underneath to hide the actual shape). Although we still don’t know the exact design of the vehicle or its interiors, we at AutohausAZ have done a little bit of digging, and here’s what we have found:

i4 Design

The 2022 BMW i4 will be a fully-electric car with all-wheel drive and two electric motors with enough juice to go 0-60mph in four seconds and an impressive range of 350+ miles. This car is purportedly the closest competitor to Tesla’s Model 3, which boasts AWD, 0-60 acceleration in 3.2 seconds, and a 310-mile range.

One of the most significant concerns in electric car design is electric mileage - is the investment worth the short duration between charges? It seems that both Tesla and BMW have taken those concerns to heart. The 2019 Chevy Bolt EV clocks in at around 238 miles, and, as of July 2019, this is the highest mileage for any non-Tesla electric car, well below the 2022 BMW i4 and the Model 3.

From the spy photos of the camouflaged i4 prototype, we can report that the 2022 car has a standard BMW shape built on the same platform as the 3-series and 4-series, reminiscent of the 4-series Gran Coupe. We also know that BMW is basing their stylings on the i Vision Dynamics concept unveiled at the Frankfurt auto show in 2017. We are also aware that the journey from concept to manufacturing is a long one; therefore, we cannot be sure of how this car will actually look.

The Future of BMW Electric Vehicles

The 2022 BMW i4 is supposed to arrive in 2021 and start at an estimated $50,000.

After BMW’s interesting innovations, including the lunchbox i3, battery-powered carbon-fiber early adopters, and the i8 plug-in pseudo-supercar, the universal appeal of a 4-series Gran Coupe-esque all-electric car, along with the practicability of the vehicle and its affordability, make the i4 a more realistic purchase for many consumers. In addition to the i4, BMW Group CEO Harald Krueger has also announced that the i4 is only one out of twelve electric cars the automaker will launch before 2026.
