The A4 was a key ingredient in Audi's resurgence in the United States in the late 1990s. Though technologically advanced for their time, earlier Audis were plagued by quality and reliability issues in the 1980s, compounded by allegations of unintended acceleration in the Audi 5000 in the late 80s. Though eventually found to be largely attributed to driver error, the damage was done. Audi sales dropped dramatically in the US for several years. Audi needed a miracle to survive in the US; the answer was the A4.
No matter the issue, big or small, AutohausAZ has all the Audi A4 Parts your B5- Audi B9 will ever need.
B5- The original A4 (1994-2001)
Introduced in the US as a 1995 model, the B5 A4 was built on an all new platform and represented a rebirth of a legendary brand. Styling was futuristic, featuring the now-iconic rounded body style. Sold initially as a 4-door sedan and shortly after as a wagon (Avant), the A4 was offered with Audi's legendary Quattro all-wheel-drive system as well as front wheel drive. The A4 was also the first platform to be powered by the later-ubiquitous 1.8T 4-cylinder engine. Bred from a racing background, the 20 valve (5 per cylinder) engine produced amazing power for its size while giving respectable fuel economy. The A4 was also available with a 2.8-liter V6 as well as a 2.7L twin turbo V6 in the performance S4 model. This platform also saw the launch of another new technology, the Tiptronic automatic transmission that allowed manual gear changes in a traditional automatic. 1999 saw a minor facelift through the final few years of production while the next model was being finalized. In the end the B5 sold over 1.5 million units worldwide.
B6- 2001-2005
Following on the success of the original, the second generation refreshed the styling and offered increased engine power. The 1.8T increased in power and the V6 increased displacement to 3.0L. The Quattro AWD system was further refined, and a new Bosch-developed stability and braking control system was introduced as standard equipment across the model range.
The S4 also had an upgrade, going from a twin turbo V6 to a small-displacement 4.2L V8.
B7- 2004-2008
While more of a facelift, Audi classified this relatively short run version as an all new platform due to the numerous cosmetic and mechanical changes. The B7 also saw the introduction of the upgraded 2.0T 4-cylinder engine, further increasing power output of the base engine offered in the US. Continued improvements in safety technology led to another upgrade in the driver assistance systems as well as exterior cosmetic changes, although the interior remained very similar to the previous platform. This generation also saw the introduction of the super high-performance RS4.
B8- 2008-2016
The B8 version features a new to model platform known as the Modular Longitudinal Platform, or MLP. This new chassis design allowed the wheelbase to be extended closer to the front and rear while limiting increases to the total length of the vehicle. This change also redistributed the weight ratio. This and other changes led to handling improvements and adding interior room, particularly in the rear seats. Continued technology improvements, as in previous generations, offered increases in safety and driver comfort. This generation also saw the introduction of the Allroad Quattro, offering a wider stance, increased ground clearance and distinctive styling. The Allroad is great for rural areas where driving off paved roads is common, as well as advantages for areas that experience extensive snow in the winter months. Engine improvements continued with all gas engines now featuring Audi's direct injection (Audi's FSI). Tweaks to the Quattro AWD system included a new center differential which shifted torque split towards the rear wheels by default and offered a more spirited driving experience. The B8 was also the first version of the A4 to feature advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), such as lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring and more. S4 reduced engine displacement back to a supercharged V6, although the RS4 still features a V8.
B9- 2016-present
The fifth and latest generation A4 continues Audi's tradition of a spirited and comfortable European sedan. Reduced weight contributes to improvements in fuel economy, while continued improvements in electronics adds to the safety and comfort of drivers and passengers. Engine power continues to increase across all engine offerings while the latest generation RS4 bucks the old adage of "no replacement for displacement", reducing size back to a forced-induction V6 like its cousin the S4. Many common issues with A4 engines relate to the oil management system. The increased heat of the oil tank often causes your synthetic oil to prematurely burn up. Audi A4 oil is available in individual liters for 5-liter containers. AutohausAZ also offers comprehensive cooling system kits for VW and Audi. These will come with everything needed right down to the Audi Coolant from the dealer. Genuine antifreeze and lubricants are always in stock.
