The rear-wheel drive 2 series first became available in 2014 as the F22 & F23. In 2016 BMW introduced the M variant of the 2-series, the M2. The M2 replaced the sportiest of the 1-series platform coupes, the 1 series M coupe. The engines used in the 2 series were the N55 and S55 engine.
The N55 engine was BMW’s first foray into the twin-scroll turbocharger. The twin scroll worked by utilizing separate exhaust gas inlets. This allowed for the two different exhaust gasses to travel through separate spiral chambers prior to entering the turbine. The resulting performance is less turbo lag and really feeling the compression within the turbo housing at lower speeds. Normally, a twin turbo engine will provide most of its boost later in the RPM band. The twin scroll allows for more evenly distributed power while accelerating.
The S55 engine was the performance-inspired version of the N55 engine. The RPM band was extended by 600 RPM of usable torque as well as boasting more favorable compression within the twin turbos. Other upgrades were levied upon the fuel pumps, revised intercoolers, and a lightweight crankshaft.
