The first Porsche to be road-certified was the Porsche 356. Produced in Gmund, the 1948 built roadster came with a meager 1.1L air-cooled flat-4-cylinder engine. The Porsche 356 predated the 356A, with the main difference being the center rod on the windshield dividing the windscreen into two on the former. Both the 356 Gmund and the early 1950s 356 1100 had bumpers that were flush with the rest of the body. Later versions of the Porsche 356, like the 1300 Super, and distinguishable chrome bumper guards set out from the body. The original engine in the Porsche 356 was based off the same platform as the VW Beetle. So why did this new brand at the time think they could sell a previously unknown vehicle for twice the price? Well they upgraded the cylinder heads, the Porsche camshafts, crankshaft, intake manifolds and exhaust manifolds. So, for twice the price, you effectively got twice the horsepower. In today's dollars the Porsche 356 would run you about $45K. Though don't expect that price at the next Barret Jackson auction. The average 356 goes for about 10x that, with the most expensive one ever sold belonging to Janis Joplin. The rocker's daily driver reportedly went to auction listed at $1.7 million! If you find yourself to be the lucky owner of a 356, you'll want to take extra care to ensure you're using the best in Porsche 356 parts to maintain it. At AutohausAZ, we value the well-being and longevity of your ride just as much as you do. That is why we work tirelessly to stock our catalog full of Porsche 356 parts from the most-trusted brands and at the lowest prices.
