The VW 412 debuted in August 1972 to replace the VW 411. Among the modifications were new nose panels and a reworked headlight surrounded with Halogen lighting. By August 1974, the engine's displacement had increased to 1,795 cc, and the fuel system had switched back to a twin-carburetor configuration. The 412's 1,679cc engine, utilized in 1972 and 1973, produced 80 horsepower. In base models and 412 S versions, the 1,795cc version produced 75 horsepower and 85 horsepower, respectively. An optional three-speed automatic gearbox or a four-speed all-synchronized manual transmission with a floor-mounted lever controlled the engine's transmission.
The 412 was canceled due to weak sales after only six years of manufacturing, having only produced 367,728 units. Depending on the business, those numbers aren't bad, but it was not significant enough for an international powerhouse like Volkswagen. Nevertheless, despite the short manufacturing time and low output, many VW 412 parts are still available for the mid-range vehicle.
