VW Golf Brake Parts

The brake pads are needed to provide the friction that will slow or stop the vehicle. The brake rotors, called discs, are the surfaces the brake pads clamp onto, producing the required friction. The brake pads are located within the calipers and, when hydraulic pressure is applied, are pressed firmly onto the rotors. The brake lines and hoses carry the brake fluid from the master cylinder to the calipers. The master cylinder generates hydraulic pressure when the brake pedal is pushed down. In turn, brake fluid, a hydraulic fluid, translates force into pressure to activate the braking system.

Usually, the parking brake is known as the handbrake or emergency brake, and it is an independent system from the primary brake system—this way, when the car is parked, it will not move. Wheel cylinders are part of the drum brake system and play a vital role in applying pressure to the brake shoes. These brake shoes, basically part of the drum brakes, press outwards against the drum, thus decelerating the vehicle. Finally, the brake booster increases the force applied by the driver upon the brake pedal, which results in more efficient braking.

Typical Lifespan of VW Golf Brake Parts

The average life span of brake pads in a VW Golf would be between 30,000 and 70,000 miles, depending on driving habits and conditions. Brake rotors typically last around 50,000 to 70,000 miles before they need resurfacing or replacement. On the other hand, brake calipers should typically last longer than that—about 100,000 miles or so—unless they develop problems such as sticking or the caliper starts leaking. Brake hoses and lines can last 60,000 to 100,000 miles, but should be inspected from time to time for any signs of deterioration or damage. Brake wear sensors usually last as long as the brake pads themselves and are replaced when the pads are replaced.

Signs to Replace VW Golf Brake Parts

If you hear a squealing or grinding noise when you apply the brakes, it is probably time to replace the brake pads. A pulsating or vibrating feeling running through the pedal when you're braking might mean that the brake rotors are warped and need to be replaced. Uneven braking or brake fluid leaking around the wheels could indicate that the brake calipers are failing and need to be looked at.

A soft or spongy brake pedal feel can be an indication that the brake lines or hoses have deteriorated and should be inspected for possible replacement. If your brake warning light stays on, it may also mean that the brake wear sensors have sensed low pad thickness and need replacement.
