The Transporter is a product of the evolving VW Bus, originally called the Hippie Van. Marketed in the US as the EuroVan, the Transporter first showed up in 1990. The T4 Transporter succeeded the Type 2/3 aka the VW Vanagon. The VW Transporter was the first VW Van to use a water-cooled engine, a change that Porsche had made years prior. Water-cooled engines are favorable to air-cooled as they reduce the expansion events caused by heat by regulating overall engine thermal efficiency. The VW Transporter’s success is marked by the second longest VW production cycle to date, trailing only the original Beetle T1. The Transporter was quite popular as a campervan, similar to Westfalias, and came with gas, diesel, and turbocharged direct injection engines ranging from a 1.9L inline-4 SOHC to the 2.8L VR6 DOHC model.
Due to the age of many of the VW Bus and Campervans, pretty much every non-aesthetic part in the engine will need to be checked periodically. Especially on pre-fuel injected VWs, the Carburetor driven internal combustion engines will likely need fuel delivery servicing.
