The Porsche 924 was actually a product of Audi out of Germany on behalf of Porsche. The 924 was the first Porsche to deviate from air-cooling. The water-cooled front-engine Porsche was also the first of its kind to offer drivers an automatic transmission. The 924 superseded the 914, and was replaced by the 944 in the mid 1980s. The rear-wheel drive inline-four was also the first Porsche to provide almost equivalent front and rear-end weight distribution.
When Audi discontinued producing the engine for the 924, Porsche decided to tweak the 944-engine and install it in the 924. They renamed it the 924S. As such, many of the part number sequences for the 924, begin with "944."
