In the 80s and early 90s BMW updated the E21, and created the 2nd generation 3 series, the E30. The E30 was BMW's first foray into the 3 series 4-door sedan. The E21 was considered to be a compact executive body style, the interior spaciousness of the E30 allowed for a much more navigable cockpit. It came in 4 & 6 cylinder, as well as a diesel iteration.
