The steering damper on your Mercedes is a small shock attached to the steering linkage that absorbs inconsistencies in the road that may affect the steering linkage. Things like potholes and dips in the road can cause the tires to wobble or veer quickly in one direction or another. These movements of the wheels can travel through the steering linkage all the way to the steering wheel. However, on your Mercedes, the steering damper absorbs these movements to set the tires back on track without the driver feeling a thing. Over time the damper will wear out just like any other shock absorber. When this happens, the driver will feel the steering wheel jerk from the road and even uncontrollable steering jerk could happen in extreme conditions, and the steering damper must be replaced to stabilize the steering linkage.
