The antenna mast on your vehicle is used to pick up radio waves for radio and stereo function. Some antenna masts can also pick up satellite, cellular and digital cellular signals for mobile phone, satellite radio, and digital streaming services.

Some antenna masts are telescopic and rise when the vehicle is running and lower when the vehicle is turned off while other antenna masts are fixed.

Replacing Your Vehicle’s Antenna Mast
Antenna masts need to be replaced for an array of reasons.

  • Telescoping masts need to be replaced when they get damaged or broken off, often happening when driving through a car wash.
  • Fixed antenna masts most commonly need to be replaced from becoming sun-rotted and falling apart.
  • Powered or amplified antennas need to be replaced when there is a short in the power circuit or when the amplifier fails.

Replacement of the antenna masts will vary depending on the type of antenna mast used. Fixed antenna masts can usually be unscrewed from the antenna mount with a new mast being screwed on. Other powered fixed antenna masts require caps on the masts to be removed so the antenna can be unbolted. Telescoping antenna masts can sometimes be replaced by removing the collar around the base of the antenna mast and turning the car on so that the antenna motor runs until the entire antenna and cord comes out and then reversing the process with a new antenna mast.
