The timing belt on the Volvo B5254T engine is used to turn and sync the camshafts to the crankshaft to time ignition, fuel injection, and valve operations for engine combustion. As part of routine maintenance Volvo recommends replacing the timing belt on the B5254T engine every 10 years or 120,000 along with the timing belt tensioner and idler pulley to prevent the engine from going off timing. If the B5254T engine goes off timing because of the tensioner or idler loosening, the engine will not run. However, if the engine goes off timing due to the belt breaking, the engine could spin out of control allowing the engine pistons to collide with the valve leaving the engine needing to be rebuilt or replaced. The Continental ContiTech TB331 timing belt is an original equipment replacement for the Volvo 274338 timing belt used on the 1998-2016 B5254T engine found in various Volvo models like the C70, S60, and XC90.
