Brake drums are machined iron cylinders, open on one end to cover the brake shoes and wheel cylinders of the brake system, drilled on the other end to accept the wheel lugs and attach the drum to the wheel hub, and are used to slow the wheel and bring it to a stop. They function by turning with the wheel and having the brake shoes press outward against the inside of the brake drum to create friction and slow the wheel to a stop. Brake drums are also used to lock brake shoes against the inside of the brake drum as the parking brake.

Drum brakes are commonly used on the rear of compact and midsize cars and light trucks as well as on light motorcycles. However, drum brakes were frequently used for both front and rear brakes on passenger vehicles up through the 1960s.

The friction created to slow the wheel creates a lot of heat that overtime can warp brake drums and glaze the inner surface of the drum contacted by the shoes, making the shoes unable to grip the drums as well as they should and increasing the time it takes for the wheels to slow to a stop. Sometimes the inner surface of the brake drum can be resurfaced for the drum to adequately slow the wheel. However, resurfacing a brake drum thins the outer wall of the drum, leaving it susceptible to warping quickly. This is why it is always recommended to replace warped brake drums or brake drums with a glazed inner surface to ensure the quickest and safest stop possible.

Replacing Your BMW Brake Drums

Brake drums are recommended to be replaced along with new brake shoes. When replacing the brake drums, the brake shoes should be adjusted to rest just out of contact with the brake drum to make the gap the shoes need to travel to reach the drum as short as possible for a precise braking response.
