  • The Mercedes 4Matic all wheel drive system allows for maximum traction on any road conditions. From snow and ice, to heavy rain, and even sand and gravel, the second generation Mercedes 4Matic found on the 2003-2006 Mercedes S430 and S500 is a light weight, full time, four-wheel drive system utilizing three differentials and ABS assisted traction control to gently brake a slipping wheel to allow the wheels with traction to drive and steer the vehicle.
  • The front drive shafts used on the 4Matic system consist of two grease filled rubber boot covered constant velocity (CV) joints, one for the located at the wheel and one located at the differential, connected to each other by a metal driver shaft.
  • The boots that cover the CV joints dry up and crack over time, causing the grease to leave the joints, and the joints to dry out bind and fail. If there is a clicking sound from the front axles on your 4Matic Mercedes, the CV joints are dried out and beginning to bind and need to be replaced ASAP.
  • The GKN Loebro front left axle shaft 2203300001 is the original equipment axle shaft used by Mercedes and the preferred axle shaft used by Mercedes technicians.
