The flywheel is a large metal disc attached to the rear of the engine crankshaft in your BMW. It allows for power transfer from the engine to the transmission and aids in balancing the rotation of the engine. Most flywheels also have a toothed outer ring gear that allows the starter to engage the flywheel and turn over the engine for the engine to start.

The flywheel functions in unison with the transmission clutch. When the clutch is engaged, the clutch disc holds the flywheel allowing the clutch disc to turn the transmission shaft at the same rotational speed as the transmission. When the clutch is disengaged, the disc releases from the flywheel allowing the transmission to shift.

The constant disengaging and engaging of the clutch disc to the flywheel will wear down the clutch disc and glaze over the flywheel until the clutch disc begins to slip when engaged. At this point, the flywheel and the clutch disc in your BMW will need to be replaced.

Some flywheels are made up of two pieces with one or multiple springs between the two pieces to dampen to force of the clutch engaging the transmission to the engine. Flywheels should be replaced along with a new clutch disc, pressure plate, pilot bearing, and release bearing and will require the removal of the transmission to access.
