The turbocharger on your Mini Cooper uses expelled exhaust gas pressure to spin a turbine that increases the volume of air entering the engine through the air intake to increase engine power while using less fuel. Since exhaust gases exiting the engine can range from 900°-1200° Fahrenheit, it is vital to keep the turbocharger cool to prevent the bearings from overheateding and seizing up. To prevent the turbocharger from overheating, engine coolant is circulated through the turbocharger to remove heat just like it does through the engine block and cylinder head. A commonly failed part of the turbocharger cooling system is the coolant return line from turbocharger to the engine thermostat and expansion tank. Due to it's proximity to the turbocharger, it is subject to extreme heat from the turbocharger, causing the silicone rubber hose to become brittle and leak coolant. When this happens, the coolant return line must be replaced to prevent overheating of the turbocharger and engine. This genuine Mini Cooper is the same you would find at the dealer for the 2009-2012 Cooper JCW and JCW Clubman, 2012 JCW Coupe and Roadster, and 2007-2010 Cooper S models.
