The front brakes on your BMW M5 make up about 75% of your BMW’s braking ability. Every time you brake, hydraulic fluid is forced into the brake calipers, clamping brake pads on both sides of each brake rotor, slowing your M5 to a stop. The harder and longer you press on the brake pedal, the harder and longer the brake pads clamp the rotors and the faster your M5 comes to a stop. Every time the brake pad contacts the rotor, the rotor heats up and cools after the pads release it. The friction of the brake pads being held against a rotor can heat the rotor up to nearly 1000°F which causes the rotor surface to glaze over and warp; making the brake pads unable to fully grab hold and evenly distribute pressure on the rotor. When this happens you'll know it, as your M5 will not stop as fast and you will feel a vibration in the brake pedal and steering wheel when braking.
