As the name suggests, there was not a more creative nor apropos name for the Volkswagen Type 181 than “The Thing.” The 2-wheel drive convertible has many marked features that make it as individual and unique as its name. Originally built as a military vehicle, VW got the bright idea to release this all-purpose vehicle to the masses in the late 1960s. For about 10 years, the 4 removable door iterations of the Thing existed in economies all over the world as: the Kurierwagen, the Trekker, the Safari, and the Pescaccia. Built off the same floor plan as the widely popular Karmann Ghia, the Thing has become somewhat of a classic in the 2000s. While the exterior was inexplicably unique, many found the flat windshield instead of rounded windshield one of the few flattering features. The interior was mostly painted sheet metal with individual bucket seats. The VW Thing had a stark resemblance to the Citroen Mehari, which was in broad circulation in Belgium during the same time period.
