Imagine traveling 185mph and suddenly having to come to a stop in less than four seconds. This is what is on the mind of Brembo engineers every day and why Brembo is a world leader in the development of innovating automotive braking technology. Starting as a small mechanical workshop in Bergamo, Italy, Brembo has grown to have 12,000 employees, 29 facilities, in 15 countries around the world, specializing in OE, aftermarket, and racing brake systems. Brembo is the #1 supplier of high-performance brake systems for the top manufacturers of automobiles, motorcycles, and commercial vehicles around the world, and is leading in racing brake development with more than 500 championships won with Brembo brakes. Brembo brands include Brembo, AP Racing, Breco, Bybre, SBS Friction, J.Juan, and Marchesini.
The Science Behind Brembo Brakes
Brembo’s dedication to quality is unmatched in the automotive spare parts industry. One out of every ten employees is involved in research and development, working daily to fine tune products for increased safety and performance. Exploring and experimenting with new materials has allowed Brembo to push the boundaries, creating innovative new solutions that conventional braking technology of the day could not. To ensure every Brembo product on the market meets Brembo’s quality standards, Brembo spends 350,000-man hours bench testing and 200,000-man hours road testing traveling more than 600,000 miles, enough to travel to the moon and back 3x. Brembo static tests prototypes with loads greater than what would be applicable to the vehicles they are designed for. Dynamic testing is used to simulate all imaginable real-world situations. Autonomously controlled roller benches are capable of testing cars, bikes, and trucks 24/7 at speeds of up to 155mph, and in temperatures from -30° to 40° C. Teams of engineers and drivers put every product to the test on the road, on the track, and in the dirt so that there is no question that Brembo will outperform every other part on the market.
The History of Brembo
In 1961, Emilio Bombassei founded Brembo as a mechanical workshop. Bombassei’s skill in mechanics and knowledge of metal properties and compounds drew the attention of Italian auto manufacturers like Alfa Romeo, who used Brembo parts in OE assembly. Brembo began production of the first Italian brake discs in 1964 for the replacement part market, paving the way for Brembo to become the leader in replacement brake discs for European automakers. The 1970s brought Brembo continued success when in 1972 Brembo started to supply brakes for Europe’s most prestigious motorcycle manufacturer, Moto Guzzi. Bombassei was then approached by Enzo Ferrari to fit his Formula 1 race cars with Brembo brakes. In the 1980’s, Brembo focused on developing new and innovative brake parts for passenger cars, motorsports, and motorcycles. One of these new products was the first aluminum brake caliper, adopted by high performance car manufacturers like Porsche, Mercedes Lancia, BMW, Nissan, and Chrysler. Brembo also decided to expand its operations to include commercial and industrial brakes, supplying Iveco, Renault, and Mercedes. In the 2000s, Brembo went global with the acquisitions of Brazilian brake disc and flywheel manufacturer Alfa Real Mina, British manufacturer of motorcycle brakes and clutches AP Racing, and magnesium motorcycle wheel manufacturer Marchesini. Brembo also began using carbon ceramic technology to produce high-end heat reducing brakes for sports car manufacturers Aston Martin, Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Daimler, Ferrari, General Motors, Lamborghini, and Porsche. In the 2010s, Brembo launched a new line, Bybre, manufacturing brake systems for scooters and small motorcycle manufacturers in India. Next, Brembo expanded with manufacturing facilities in the US, Mexico, and China to meet worldwide demand. Recently Brembo acquired the Danish company SBS Friction, who specializes in organic braking compounds, to aid Brembo in becoming more eco-friendly. Moving forward, Brembo is ready for the challenges of tomorrow. Working with electric and autonomous auto makers and anticipating growth with a focus on sustainability. When you know you can stop, you are not afraid to push the boundaries.
