NGK Iridium Spark Plugs
NGK was founded on November 11th, 1936, when Magoemon Ezoe invested one million yen and opened NGK Spark Plug Co. LTD. One year later NGK was delivering high quality ceramic sparks plugs to Japanese automobile and heavy machine manufacturers. In 1949, seeing the diverse uses of high-quality ceramics, NGK went public producing ceramics for technical uses. In 1953 NGK began developing engine igniters for aircrafts and in 1958 NGK began producing ceramic cutting tools and inserts under the brand NTK which is still one of the most important divisions of NGK behind spark plugs. In 1959 NGK went international, opening their first spark plug factory outside Japan in Brazil, and with their ongoing success in the advancement of spark plugs began developing ceramic modules for telecommunications. NGK continued to expand, opening its first US facility in 1966, Malaysia facility in 1973, German facility in 1975, Indonesia facility in 1977, and British facility in 1979. In 1979 NGK patented its famous V-Power spark plug with a cut V grooved electrode allowing NGK spark plugs to produce a stronger spark than any other spark plug to date. In the 1980s NGK started experimenting with other rare earth elements to improve on the copper electrode spark plug that wore out in under 30,000 miles and introduced the Platinum tipped spark plug that could last three times longer than traditional copper plugs. NGK also introduced O2, oil level, knock, and EGR sensors to the NTK brand to expand the range of products and opened two new facilities in Australia and Canada to meet worldwide demand. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s NGK spark plugs became the best selling spark plug brand in the world, and with the introduction of the Iridium IX spark plug in 2000, NGK had surpassed every other spark plug manufacturer with a spark plug that had a lifespan exceeding 130,000 miles.
