As now part of the ZF Friedrichshafen AG group the ZF name has been in the automotive gear business since 1919 and building automatic transmissions since the 1960s. Although the ZF Group encompasses many different brands, the ZF division is known for its innovative electronic transmissions for modern cars. Introducing first six speed, then eight speed and now ten speed (and beyond) electronic transmissions which optimize power and fuel efficiency. If your car has a ZF transmission then you need to use only factory approved ZF replacement parts for any service work.
ZF Products
The ZF transmission parts offered for your car are normally at the service and maintenance level as most modern transmissions do not allow for total teardown in the field. We offer the original ZF automatic transmission filters, fluid pan assemblies, and the specific ZF automatic transmission fluid required for your specific transmission. Please note that many modern transmissions do not have a dipstick for external verification of proper ATF level, please obtain proper procedures prior to doing any service.
ZF Automatic Transmission Filter
Proper filtration of automatic transmission fluid is vital to the longevity of the transmission. The ZF transmission filter that came installed on your car’s ZF transmission should always be replaced with an original ZF filter unit. These filters were designed specifically for that transmission and have the correct flow rate and filtration level required. Depending upon your car the transmission pan needs to be unbolted to allow the transmission fluid to drain into a proper receptacle and the pan then completely removed to have access to the filter for replacement. Always reinstall the filter and refill with new ZF automatic transmission fluid before starting the car.
ZF Auto Trans Oil Pan and Filter Kit
Many of the modern electronic transmissions now have the filter built into the transmission oil pan as a space and weight savings as well as being able to incorporate more functionality. These kits have the plastic transmission oil pan and any associated drain plug or seals required to reinstall. Just drain the transmission, drop the old unit and bolt up the new filter and pan assembly. Make sure to use the proper tightening sequence and torque specified for your transmission. Please check the AutohausAZ catalog to see if your car can use one of these ZF auto trans oil pan and filter kits.
ZF Automatic Transmission Fluid
The good ole days of putting any old red ATF into the transmission are long gone. All of the newer electronic transmissions require a specific automatic transmission fluid and use of supposed “equivalent to” type fluid may even void your warranty on that very expensive transmission. If you have a ZF electronic transmission in your car then you need to use the exact ZF transmission fluid specified for your car. Before starting make sure if your transmission calls for ZF LifeguardFluid 5 or 6 or 8 or even the latest LifeguardFluid9, these are not interchangeable and have very specific uses. Please also note before starting how much fluid is required for a pan-drop change as opposed to complete system including the draining of the torque converter. Many cars do not have drains on the torque converter and must be hooked up to a machine to remove that portion of the fluid. And if your car does not have a transmission dipstick for checking the level, obtain the proper procedures before draining!
