The engine air filter in your BMW removes dirt and other particulates from entering your engine’s intake to maximize performance and increase fuel economy. The cleaner the air entering your engine, the better it mixes with fuel to have a more complete burn during engine combustion.

When your engine air filter is dirty, it reduces the amount of air that can enter your engine, causing your BMW to consume more fuel and lose performance. If your engine air filter becomes clogged, it can starve your engine of air causing the engine to misfire and run rough. Additionally, it can cause crankcase air and oil to be drawn in from the engine contaminating air hoses with oil and forcing your engine to burn oil.

Signs that Your BMW Air Filter Needs to be Replaced
A loss in fuel economy and engine performance are the most common signs that your engine air filter needs to be replaced. Black smoke from the exhaust and a rough running engine can be signs the engine air filter is completely clogged and could be causing damage to your engine.

Replacing Your BMW Air Filter
BMW engine air filters should be replaced yearly or every 10,000-15,000 miles. If you live in a particularly arid climate, changing your engine air filter more often is recommended due to the amount of dirt and dust in the air.

Most engine air filters are located at the front of the engine and can easily be replaced with little to no tools by removing the filter cover to access the filter. Some engines have the engine air filters covered and may require more extensive removal of covers, hoses and even air boxes to remove and replace the filter.
