The oxygen sensors on your vehicle measure the amount of oxygen in the exhaust both before and after the catalytic converter to monitor vehicle emissions. The sensor in front of the catalytic converter relays the oxygen readings to the engine computer to manage fuel trim to lower vehicle emissions, and the sensor behind the catalytic converter relays oxygen readings to the engine computer to verify the catalytic converter is removing dangerous gasses from the exhaust before leaving the vehicle.
