The blower motor supplies airflow to your vehicle's climate control system and draws fresh air in from outside your BMW to prevent the air in the cabin from becoming stale and stagnant. Blower motors are direct current electric motors attached to a squirrel cage fan blade to blow air through the dash, floor, defrost, and rear passenger vents. Blower motors can spin at varying speeds based on current flow to the motor from the blower motor regulator controlled by the fan setting of the driver.

Blower motors come in an array of setups based on the design of your BMW. Some have one squirrel cage fan blade, and some have two. Some have a separate regulator, and others have the regulator built into the assembly. Some replacement blower motors come with the fan blades, while others don't and require removing the existing fan blade to be installed on the new motor.

Blower motors fail when the motor's electrical coil winding overheats and burn out, leaving the motor magnets unable to be energized and spin.

Replacing Your BMW Blower Motor

Replacing a blower motor can be a simple task depending on its location and accessibility. Blower motors are often located on the vehicle's passenger side behind the dashboard and usually have an access panel below the dashboard in the passenger foot well. They may also be installed facing up under the passenger side of the dashboard and do not require the removal of any panel to be accessed. Blower motors located in the rear or center consoles require the removal of the interior body they are behind or removing the center console cover to access.
