The timing chain on your Saab keeps the crankshaft and camshafts synced to time engine compression with fuel and spark delivery for engine ignition. They can also be used to keep the camshafts on dual overhead cam (DOHC) engines timed to each other. The timing chain is a linked machine chain similar to a bicycle chain and can be single or double rowed depending on the vehicle manufacturer.

Because timing chains are metal, they do not need to be replaced as part of regular maintenance. However, timing chains can stretch overtime causing slack in the chain that can make the engine come out of timing or cause rattling to come from the front of the engine. When this happens, the timing chain will need to be replaced to get the engine back in proper timing and prevent the slack in the chain from wear through the engine cases and timing covers.

Replacing Your Saab Timing Chain

When replacing timing chains it is always recommended to replace the timing chain tensioners and chain guides. In addition, due to the extensive tear down of the engine to access the timing chains, parts like timing chain driven water pumps and any other timing chains and their tensions should be replaced to prevent having to open up the engine again if any of those parts fail in the future.
