The 2006 Volvo XC90 fuel pressure sensor improves fuel economy and reduces evaporative emissions by giving precise fuel injection pressure reading to the engine computer and allowing the fuel return line to be eliminated. As the fuel pump runs, building pressure in the fuel injection system, the fuel pressure sensor tells the engine computer when the optimal fuel pressure is achieved for engine combustion to be most efficient. And without a fuel return line to the tank, less unpressurized fuel can evaporate helping to relieve the EVAP emissions system. If this sensor fails, the fuel pump will continue to operate using a predetermined set of parameters that can cause poor fuel economy, poor accelerations, engine surging and stalling, hard starting, or even the engine to not start.
