The clutch on your Subaru is responsible for transferring all the engine’s power to the transmission. It accomplishes this by using a pressure plate to hold a friction disc locked on the transmission input shaft to the engine’s flywheel, mating the engine’s crankshaft to the transmission input. When shifting, the release bearing removes to hold the pressure plate on the friction disc. This removes the connection between the engine and transmission and allowing the driver to shift from one gear to another. Once shifting is complete, it's pulled back from the pressure plate reinstating it's hold on the friction disc to the flywheel and reconnecting the engine and transmission. The action engaging and disengaging the engine to the transmission wears one the friction disc and will eventually wear it out along with fatiguing the finger springs of the pressure plate and release bearing. When this happens, the clutch will begin to slip, losing the power transfer between the engine and transmission, making it increasingly difficult to shift the transmission, and replacement of the clutch is the only solution.
