  • The BMW XDrive all wheel drive system utilizes an electronically actuated transfer case that uses the drive shafts to distribute power between the front and rear differentials which vary torque to each wheel through axle shafts giving you optimum traction and stability on all road conditions.
  • Each axle shaft consists of two grease filled constant velocity (CV) joints protected by rubber boots, one located at the wheel and one located at the differential, connected to each other by a metal driver shaft.
  • Over time the boots that cover the CV joints dry up and crack allowing the grease to leave the joints, and the joints to dry out bind and fail. When this happens on one of the front axle shafts, an audible clicking sound will be heard when turning, indicating the CV joints are dried out, beginning to bind, and the axles shaft needs to be replaced ASAP.
