To maximize the amount of fuel your Mini Cooper can carry in as smallest of a space as possible, a saddle style fuel tank is used. This fuel tank has one right side and one left side well that hold fuel which are connected by a transfer channel at the top of the tank. To keep the level in each well the same, the fuel filter assembly in the right side well acts as a transfer pump from the right well to the left while filtering fuel. In addition, the fuel filter on the right and main fuel pump on the left both have their own fuel level sensor which work together to provide the fuel gauge reading on the dash. The plastic top of the fuel filter housing is known to crack, leaking fuel beneath the rear seat and allowing fuel fumes inside the vehicle.
