The ignition coils on your Toyota create the high voltage needed for the spark to ignite engine combustion. Previous ignition systems used a mechanical distributor with a cap and rotor, and spark plug wires to deliver high voltage from a single ignition coil to the spark plugs in each cylinder. This distributor ignition system was prone to coming out of time with the engine and required yearly maintenance to keep your engine running. To simplify engine operation, your Toyota utilizes a single computer controlled ignition coil for each cylinder, eliminating the need for a distributor and wires, making the ignition system on your Toyota last longer and be more reliable. If an ignition coil fails on your Toyota, it will cause your engine to run rough, lack power, consume excess fuel, and your check engine light to illuminate. Because ignition coils designed for distributorless ignitions should all roughly have the same lifespan, when one fails, all the ignition coils should be replaced.
