From 1969-1976, the Porsche 914 represented the first true roadster from Porsche. 20 years later, Porsche designed and released the follow-up roadster, the Porsche Boxster. The 2-seater was powered by a 2.5L flat 6, weak by their current lineup standards but also a more affordable Porsche when compared to the 911 or Carrera. The beefier roadster variant, the Boxster S, wasn’t introduced until 2000.
The first-generation Boxster or the 986, was very affordable and thus popular as it cost about the same as the BMW 3 series in 1996 dollars. The M96 water-cooled engine is prone to failed cylinder liners, as well as engine oil and coolant commingling in their respective lines. The current 718 Boxster, 982, went back to a turbocharged 4 cylinder. The Boxster S utilized variable turbine technology within the turbocharger. This allowed for a more controlled pressure ratio across the turbines which reduced turbo lag and maximized the EGR valve.
