Beginning as a German spark plug factory, Beru has become the leading manufacturer of ignition components for the world’s top automakers. With 21 technology centers worldwide, Beru is able to network with all major auto and commercial vehicle manufacturers to meet the continually tightening of regulations on emissions and fuel economy. Having more than 100 patents, Beru is committed to the ongoing development of advanced technologies and production in innovating OE parts and aftermarket parts, to bring to market cleaner burning engines and vehicles with enhanced safety and comfort.
The History of Beru and Their Ignition Technology
In 1912 Julius Behr and Albert Ruprecht founded Beru-Werk as a spark plug manufacturer for gasoline engines. Beru-Werk spark plugs were some of the finest in Germany, manufactured with the highest quality materials and the best machining processes of the time. During Germany’s cold winters, especially in the mountain towns, Julius and Albert noticed that diesel trucks had difficulty starting and wanted to develop a spark plug like heater to help ignite the air/fuel mixture. In 1929, Beru-Werk developed and patented the first ever glow plugs to warm the combustion chambers of diesel engines allowing them to start easier when cold. Soon after in 1930, Beru-Werk introduced the bipolar glow plug with a replaceable filament that heated for quicker starts and was serviceable to make them last longer. After World War II Beru-Werk continued to manufacture spark plugs and glow plugs with an emphasis on improving diesel cold start systems. By 1975 Beru-Werk had introduced the rapid glow plug to the automotive market allowing cold diesel engines to start up in only 20 seconds and was now known worldwide as Beru. What most of the world didn’t know was that Beru was already looking to the future and had submitted a patent for a fast glow 5-7 second glow plug. In 1989, foreseeing the evolution of automobiles, Beru launched the development of small plug coilover ignition coils to eliminate ignition distributors with a computer-controlled ignition system. 2001 made Beru the pinnacle of diesel cold start systems, with the introduction of Beru’s Instant Start System (ISS), allowing diesel engines to finally start as fast as a gasoline engine when cold. Throughout the 2000s, Beru continued to improve on diesel cold start systems with glow plug controls to shut off the glow plugs when not needed, pressure sensing glow plugs would then relay engine pressure to adjust fuel trim and engine timing, and ceramic glow plugs that get hotter faster and keep engine temperatures longer after the engine has shut off. In 2020 Beru was acquired by Borg Warner, making Beru part of the largest OEM and aftermarket part suppliers in the world with nearly every major manufacturer of passenger and commercial vehicles using parts manufactured by Borg Warner parts and Beru.
Beru Spark Plugs
The name Beru has become synonymous with diesel cold start system technology with nearly 40% of all glow plugs sold worldwide having the Beru name on them. Over 100 years later, Beru’s headquarters is still in Ludwigsburg, Germany, where two spark plug manufacturers founded Beru-Werk and revolutionized the automotive industry. In sticking with its founders’ vision, Beru continues its commitment to not only improve diesel engine technology to increase fuel economy and reduce engine emissions, but to find new and innovative solutions for the automotive industry as a whole.
