The valve cover gaskets seal the upper engine valve cover to the cylinder head to keep in oil and keep out dirt and debris. Valve cover gaskets may be a single piece or multiple pieces and can be made from rubber, cork, silicone, liquid silicone, or a combination of these. Depending on the valve cover design, the valve cover gasket may seal only the outer edge of the valve cover to the cylinder head or the valve cover to the outer edge and inner spark plug chambers in the cylinder head.

Signs of a Faulty Valve Cover Gasket

Valve cover gaskets fail when they allow engine oil to leak from the valve cover to the engine's exterior or into the spark plug chambers. Leaking oil can saturate and degrade vacuum, coolant, and air intake hoses, cause electrical components to short or ground out, and can foul spark plugs.

Oil stains underneath your BMW, engine smoking when running or after being turned off, cylinder misfires, and engine oil consumption are all signs of an oil leak. If you notice any of these symptoms, you should thoroughly inspect the valve cover to see if oil is leaking from it.

Replacing Your BMW Valve Cover Gasket

When replacing valve cover gaskets, it is vital to clean the mating surfaces of the valve cover and cylinder head before installing new gaskets and reinstalling the valve cover to prevent new leaks. Removing and cleaning the spark plugs or changing them is also wise to prevent oil-fouled spark plug misfires.
