The Smart Fortwo is a 2-door, 2-seater coupe or convertible with a rear-engine and rear-wheel-drive format. It derives its brand name from its two-passenger seating capacity along with an early partnership between Swatch and Mercedes—a collaborative venture that is popularly known as Swatch Mercedes ART (SMART). The Smart Fortwo vehicles are built by the Daimler AG’s Smart division at their dedicated Smartville assembly plant in Hambach, France. The 1st generation Fortwo models were rolled out in 1998 at the Paris Motor Show as the Smart City-Coupe and Smart City-Cabrio.
The Smart Fortwo is available in Coupe/hatchback and Cabrio/convertible silhouettes, with each having a mono-box alignment. As of 2015, Fortwo models were in their 3rd generation and are marketed in over 46 countries worldwide. The 3rd generation Fortwo models, which bear an internally designated C453 build series, received a 200-million euro upgrade in mid-2013 and arrived at the Tempodrom in Berlin on July 16, 2014. The Smart unit of the Daimler AG had produced more than 1.7 million Fortwo models by early 2016. The original Smart Fortwo city cars came with turbocharged engines with three cylinders. The primary motor was 599cc petrol that was available in three separate versions—33 kW (45hp), 38 kW (51hp) and 45 kW (61hp). The 2002 facelift increased the engine displacement to 698cc in three distinct variants including 50hp, 41hp and 61hp. Some of the present-day models use a 1.0-liter three-cylinder drivetrain with 89 horses and 100 pounds-feet of torque. The unit mates a five-speed manual shifter and EPA-estimated figures stand at 31mpg city and 39mpg highway.
